Quaternary fluviatile deposits from the Pieman Dam site, western Tasmania by E. A. Calhoun Download PDF EPUB FB2

The Quaternary deposits are described in eight major groupings: glacial, periglacial, aeolian, fluviatile, western Tasmania book, estuarine, marine, and karst. These groupings are based on the main range of environments that existed at different places and different times Quaternary fluviatile deposits from the Pieman Dam site England during the Quaternary, some of which continue during the present Size: 1MB.

The Pieman River is a major perennial river located in the west coast region of Tasmania, Australia. Formed by the confluence of the Mackintosh Quaternary fluviatile deposits from the Pieman Dam site and Murchison River, the Pieman River rises in what is now known as Lake Rosebury, an artificial lake formed by the Bastyan Dam.

The river flows generally west and northwest and then west again Country: Australia. Quaternary deposits, mapped earlier by Pearthree and Youberg (), were the target of mapping in specific areas that were considered to be incompletely understood. In addition, all of the Quaternary deposits were evaluated and in part reinterpreted based on.

Quaternary sedimentary successions are described from the Linda Valley, a small valley in western Tasmania that was dammed by ice during Early and Middle Pleistocene glaciations.

Mapping and logging of exposures suggest that an orderly sequence of deposits formed during ice incursion, occupation and withdrawal from tributary valleys. The Boco Plain, at the northern end of the Boco River valley, is a broad, flat-floored depression extending northwards from the Pieman River valley in the northern part of the West Coast Range of Tasmania (Fig.

Holocene deposits are not faulted or tilted significantly, although basins to the west, such as Death Valley, were tectonically active during the Quaternary.

Subsidence of the western basins strongly influenced late Quaternary rates of deposition and erosion in the Tecopa basin. 1 INTRODUCTION SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATIONCited by: Jennings, C.W.,An explanatory text to accompany thescale fault and geologic maps of California: California Division of Mines and Geology, Bulletinp.

During its initial phase (), the Pieman River goldfield on Tasmania's West Coast had a maritime/riverine culture unique among Australian goldfields.

That is, located on the lower and middle reaches of the river system within a few kilometres of the Southern Ocean, it was virtually an island within the island of Tasmania, served almost entirely by : Nic Haygarth.

The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of Quaternary glaciations in Tasmania, and to assess their climatic significance. During the Quaternary, Tasmania experienced ice cap development in the West Coast Range and Central Plateau, with smaller cirque and valley glaciers developing on surrounding mountains.

addition, stanniferous palaeo-placer deposits some distance from the parent source of cassiterite, would appear to be transported initially by some other method rather than exclusively in a high-energy environment such as a fluviatile regime.

Any cassiterite grains with high sphericity may be derived from palaeo-littoral deposits. Examples of the phenome-na to which this guideline has been applied are mountain-top periglacial deposits and land-forms, Lateglacial and Holocene vegetational and environmental change and Lateglacial and Holocene changes in sea.
